On commitment to untruthful implicatures

چکیده
Abstract In the current debate on lying-misleading distinction, many theorists distinguish between lying as insincere assertion and misleading through conveying an untruthful implicature. There is growing empirical evidence that average speakers count implicatures cases of lying. What matters for them (degree) commitment to Since conversational may arise with non-assertions, presuppositions are also judged lying, a realistic conception should aim at definition it able cover these possibilities. Such conception, which supports traditional assumptions about semantics-pragmatics leads commitment-based recently proposed by number authors.

Experimental results on embedded implicatures
This handout reviews recent experimental results concerning the prevalence of embedded scalar implicatures. The focus is on Geurts and Pouscoulous 2009 (henceforth GP09), which argues that these implicatures are marginal at best, and Chemla and Spector 2011 (CS11), which argues that they are robust. I also include brief summaries of the three commentaries on GP09 that appeared in 2010 in Semant...
متن کاملConversational Implicatures
According to standard pragmatics, we should account for conversational implicatures in terms of Grice's (1975) maxims of conversation. Neo-Griceans like Atlas & Levinson (1981) and Horn (1984) seek to reduce those maxims to the so-called Q and I-principles. In this paper I want to argue that (i) there are major problems for reducing Gricean pragmatics to these two principles, and (ii) that, in ...

متن کاملOn the Calculation of Local Implicatures
By contrast, the global implicature in (1c), though entailed by (1b), does not have a similar corresponding implicature of the embedded clause when it appears unembedded. For this reason, the local/global distinction is relevant only in complex sentences. In simplex sentence such as (2a) the local and global implicatures are one and the same. The fact that (1a) has the local implicature in (1b)...
متن کاملA Gricean View on Intrusive Implicatures
particular, scalar implicatures are at the heart of a very vigorous current debate about the structure of the interpretative process. However, even if one is convinced that there are conversational implicatures of the standard Gricean sort, one might not be convinced that these two cases are best explained in Gricean terms. The enriched interpretation of coordination, for example, might seem be...
